It’s the most Australian thing you can say. At the work Christmas party it never is. Your business is responsible for what happens at staff events, on and off the clock. One bad night can mean claims, complaints and Fair Work headaches that drag into January.
Dave isn’t a bad bloke. He just never read the policy. Mel made sure he signed it anyway.
Same harbour. Same prawns. Same Dave. The only difference is whether HR said “she’ll be right” back in November.

Harbour views. Prawns on ice. Spirits high.

Dave climbs up. Phones come out. Someone covers their eyes.

Mel clocks it. Sips her bubbles. Not even slightly worried.

Work Events and Christmas Party Policy. Acknowledged. Timestamped. On file.

The Party Pack gets the message out. HR Command makes sure everyone actually read it. Policies go out, staff sign on their phone, and you can see who’s done and who hasn’t.
Generally, yes. A work Christmas party is a work event, so your obligations around safety, bullying and sexual harassment still apply, including the positive duty to prevent harassment. That’s why setting expectations in writing beforehand matters.
It depends on how connected it is to work. If the business organises it, pays for it or managers encourage it, it can still be treated as part of work. Set a clear finish time for the official event and say so in your pre-party email.
Send the pre-party email about a week out so people can plan their travel home. Send the SMS reminder on the day, a few hours before the event starts.
Your existing code of conduct, bullying and harassment, and WHS policies already apply. What matters is that staff have actually read them and know the expectations for this event. The pre-party email links it all together.
